Nursing Twinset Dress, December 2002

Pattern: converted from RTW
Fabric: Brown velour
This was a ready-to-wear set I bought a few years ago--cardigan, sleeveless shell, and elastic-waist skirt. None of the pieces fit terribly well, and it wasn't good for nursing. So I made extended armholes in the shell, cut the elastic off the skirt (and took out 4-6 inches of fullness from the side seams--so much more flattering!), and attached the skirt to the top. I took off about 11 inches (!) from the shell, to make the seam at my natural waist. I decided not to attach the cardigan to the dress, in case I want to wear it with other things. I traced the extended armholes from ELD #307 to get the approximate shape.

Nursing Shirt, September 2002
Pattern: Elizabeth Lee Designs #107b
Fabric: Off-white cotton/lycra from trimfabric.com
For some reason I never posted a picture of this shirt when I made it. It was a wearable muslin to test the pattern for my rust dress (see below). I made the shoulders size 6-8 and the sides size 10-12. It's still too big and I don't really like having the overlay so high (or the underlay so long). BUT, it certainly fits as well as any similarly-styled shirt I bought from Motherwear, and the fact that it was too big meant that I could wear it well into my current pregnancy, so all's well that ends well! Good learning experience and definitely not a waste. I wore it often this summer and expect I will again post-partum. Oh, I did try out a kind of picot-edge on the neckline, but you can't see it in the picture.

Nursing Dress, September 2002
Pattern: Elizabeth Lee Designs #107B (with added skirt)
Fabric: Autumn-y floral knit print (from Hartsdale Fabrics) and rust rayon (from Phoenix Textiles)
At last, pictures of our matching outfits! I think these are my favorite projects so far. Melanie's fits perfectly now, which means she'll probably grow out of it sooner than I'd like. I am 6 months pregnant in this picture--I think this dress will fit until the end, AND postpartum--yay! The top lifts up for side-access nursing.

Lingerie, August 2002

Pattern: Kwik-Sew 2200 Bra & Panties
Fabric: Peach nylon tricot from Elizabeth Lee Designs, ivory stretch lace from LaceHeaven.com
Panties were easy. After making the wrong size (twice!) I finally made a bra that fit, then added the skirt to make a maternity negligee. You won't find that in stores! Click on a picture for larger views.

Maternity Shirts, July 2002
Not much sewing here. These are two RTW Motherhood maternity shirts. I cut and serged a slit in the middle of each shirt, then sewed on a panel to conceal the nursing slit. The panels are quilt squares that my dear mother-in-law made for me. They are open on the sides for nursing access. I used the directions from Make Your Own Nursing Shirt, and they were very easy to do. My only change in the future would be to use smaller squares; these are a bit big for my frame (and for my shirts!) as you can see. But I'm pleased with the results, anyway.

Shirt, April 2002
This nursing T-shirt was made by Lily Richter from NMSL from an Elizabeth Lee pattern (#205?). The fabric is a gorgeous turquoise striped knit print with periwinkle flowers. I don't know what's up with my camera today; in real life the color is much not so blinding, it's much more subtle and beautiful. Anyway, thanks, Lily!
